Explore Bromo and Sempu Island: Two Paradises in a 3-Day Adventure

Are you searching for a tour that offers the ultimate mix of extreme landscapes and pristine natural beauty? Look no further than this extraordinary 3-day, 2-night trip designed to help you explore Bromo and Sempu Island. This is a journey of epic contrasts, from the lunar landscapes of an active volcano to a secluded, hidden lagoon. It’s an adventure that promises to be both thrilling and deeply serene, all within one unforgettable trip.
East Java is a treasure trove of natural wonders, and this tour showcases two of its most iconic destinations. You’ll witness the sunrise over the majestic Mount Bromo and its vast sea of sand, then venture to the tranquil, untouched beauty of Sempu Island, a protected nature reserve with a hidden lagoon. This tour is perfect for adventurers who want to experience the best of both worlds—volcanic majesty and coastal tranquility—without a moment wasted.
Mount Bromo: The Land of Fire and Sun
Your adventure begins with a night drive to Mount Bromo, located within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. This park extends across four regencies in East Java: Probolinggo, Malang, Pasuruan, and Lumajang. To reach the heart of the action, you’ll travel through Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang, the main gateway.
Mount Bromo is famous for its incredible sunrise. The perfect place to witness this spectacle is from the viewpoint at Penanjakan. We’ll arrive in the early morning, just in time to trek to the best spot to watch the sun emerge over the horizon. The view is nothing short of breathtaking. The first rays of light illuminate the volcanic landscape, revealing the silhouettes of Mount Bromo, its neighbor Mount Batok, and the towering, ever-active Mount Semeru. The vast sea of sand and the expansive caldera create a surreal, almost otherworldly scene. If you’re lucky, you might even see a rainbow stretching across the sea of sand as you descend.
After the sunrise, the journey continues with a trek to Bromo’s crater. You’ll walk across the sea of sand, often referred to as a “whispering sand” due to the sound the wind makes across the fine volcanic ash. The final ascent up a series of stairs will lead you to the crater rim, where you can peer into the smoky, bubbling core of one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. The experience is both humbling and exhilarating, a powerful reminder of nature’s raw power.
Sempu Island: A Hidden Paradise and Secluded Lagoon
From the volcanic peaks of Bromo, the tour takes a dramatic turn toward the south coast of Malang to Sempu Island, a hidden paradise and protected nature reserve. To get there, you must first reach Sendang Biru Beach, the crossing point to the island.
Sempu Island is a small, uninhabited island known for its rich flora and fauna. As a protected area, a special permit from the managing authority is required to visit, which also helps ensure the preservation of its pristine environment. The island has no fresh water sources, so all supplies must be brought from the mainland.
The main attraction on the island is Segoro Anakan, a spectacular lagoon completely enclosed by cliffs. This “Anakan Sea” is connected to the open ocean by a narrow cave that acts as a natural water channel. The water in the lagoon is calm, clear, and perfectly still, making it an ideal spot for swimming and photography. The experience of trekking through a dense forest to arrive at this secluded, serene body of water is what makes Sempu Island so special. We will set up camp here and spend the night under the stars, with a delicious BBQ dinner to cap off the day.
The morning at Segoro Anakan is simply magical. You can wake up early to enjoy the sunrise over the lagoon, take a refreshing swim, and capture the moments in photos before packing up to head back to the mainland.

24 Nov 2012Hi Keliling Nusantara,
