Explore Baluran National Park and the Blue Flame of Ijen Crater: An Epic East Java Adventure

East Java is a land of dramatic contrasts, where landscapes shift from vast, sun-scorched savannas to the ethereal glow of a volcanic crater. Our exclusive tour package is designed to take you on a journey to two of the region’s most extraordinary natural wonders. This adventure offers a unique opportunity to explore Baluran National Park and the Blue Flame of Ijen Crater, a dual experience that showcases the very best of Java’s raw, untamed beauty.
Baluran National Park, known as “Little Africa in Java,” is a rare and surprising sight on one of the world’s most densely populated islands. Here, you’ll feel transported to the African plains, with open grasslands teeming with wild animals, all set against a backdrop of a dormant volcano. On the other end of the spectrum is Ijen Crater, a place of myth and fire. Ijen is home to a world-famous natural phenomenon: the Blue Flame, a surreal, electric-blue fire that burns in the dead of night. With only two such sites known to exist in the world, Ijen offers a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Join us for this unforgettable trip, where you will witness the stunning sunrise from the top of Ijen and observe the incredible wildlife of Baluran’s vast savanna.
A Journey Through Two Unique Landscapes
Baluran National Park: A Slice of African Savanna in Java
Located on the northern coast of East Java, Baluran National Park covers a diverse area that includes savanna, lush monsoon forest, and pristine coastline. Its most famous feature is the Bekol Savanna, an expansive grassland that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into a nature documentary. From the observation tower, you can look out over the plains, a perfect vantage point to spot the park’s wild inhabitants.
The park is a sanctuary for a variety of flora and fauna, including the endangered Javanese bull (banteng), wild deer, peacocks, and a multitude of bird species. The dry season transforms the savanna into a golden expanse, while the wet season brings a vibrant green.
A highlight of the park is Bama Beach. Located on the park’s northern edge, this beach is known for its calm waters and beautiful mangroves. It’s an ideal spot for bird watching, a quick dip in the sea, or even snorkeling. The contrast between the dry, arid savanna and the cool, lush coastline makes Baluran an ecological marvel.
Ijen Crater: The Blue Fire and the World’s Most Acidic Lake
Situated on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, Ijen Crater is a stratovolcano that hides a secret. Every night, the crater floor becomes a stage for one of nature’s most spectacular shows. The Blue Fire is created when sulfuric gases, escaping from cracks in the rock at high pressure and temperature, ignite upon contact with the oxygen in the air. This combustion produces a mesmerizing blue flame that can be seen from miles away.
The Ijen experience is not just about the blue fire. After the sun rises, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of the turquoise-colored Ijen crater lake. This stunning body of water is the world’s largest highly acidic crater lake, a result of volcanic activity. The hike to the crater is challenging but immensely rewarding, offering a unique opportunity to witness the lives of the traditional sulfur miners who brave the steep paths daily to harvest volcanic sulfur.
