Overview
Madakaripura Waterfall: A Majestic Escape Near Surabaya
Madakaripura Waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder located in East Java, Indonesia, specifically in Probolinggo Regency. Renowned as the tallest waterfall on Java Island and the second-highest in Indonesia, it plunges an impressive 200 meters into a natural amphitheater of towering cliffs. This unique formation creates a constant curtain of water, earning it the nickname “eternal waterfall” as it flows continuously even during the dry season.
The waterfall holds significant historical and spiritual value, believed to be the final meditation spot of Patih Gajah Mada, a legendary general from the Majapahit Kingdom. Visitors are greeted by a statue of Patih Gajah Mada at the entrance, honoring his legacy.
To reach the main waterfall, prepare for an approximately 2-kilometer (about 30-minute) walk from the parking area. The path starts relatively flat and paved, but as you approach the falls, it becomes increasingly wet and slippery. Be prepared to walk through falling water directly overhead! It’s highly recommended to bring a raincoat or swimwear and wear appropriate footwear that can get wet, as your feet will certainly be soaked.
The best time to visit Madakaripura is during the dry season (roughly April to October) or late in the rainy season. Arriving in the morning is advisable to avoid afternoon rains, which can sometimes lead to temporary closures due to the risk of flash floods.
