Why Ujung Kulon is a World-Class Ecotourism Destination
Ujung Kulon isn’t just a tourist spot; it’s a global treasure. Its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 highlights its exceptional natural value, including the volcanic remains of Krakatoa.
- The Last Sanctuary of the Javan Rhino: The park is the final stronghold for the Javan rhinoceros, with an estimated population of 50 to 60 individuals. While spotting one is incredibly rare due to their elusive nature, knowing you are in their domain makes the experience profound.
- Rich Biodiversity: Beyond the rhino, Ujung Kulon is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including the wild bull (banteng), Javan gibbons, various types of deer, and a spectacular array of birds and reptiles. The park is a thriving ecosystem waiting to be explored.
- Diverse Landscapes: The park’s area includes a unique mix of landscapes, from dense tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps to sprawling savannas and pristine white-sand beaches. This diversity ensures a dynamic and ever-changing adventure.

With an air of excitement and anticipation, we will depart at 9:00 PM for the town of Sumur, the gateway to Ujung Kulon. Day 2: Peucang Island & The Untamed Savanna of Cidaon (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
We will arrive in Sumur at around 5:00 AM. There will be time for a quick break and a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day ahead. From Sumur, we will head to the port and board our boat for the scenic trip to Peucang Island. The boat ride takes about 4 hours, during which you can feel the city fade away as the lush green coastline of the national park comes into view.
Upon arrival at Peucang Island, you will be greeted by a pristine white-sand beach and crystal-clear waters. You’ll have some free time to relax, take photos, or simply soak in the tranquility of this isolated paradise. After a delicious lunch and a short rest, we will begin our first major trek to Karang Copong, a natural rock formation that offers a stunning view of the surrounding ocean. The trek through the typical tropical forest is an experience in itself, with the sounds of the jungle all around you.
From Karang Copong, we will continue our trekking adventure to Cidaon. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for: a vast savanna that serves as a feeding ground for wild bulls (banteng). If we are lucky, we will be able to observe these magnificent creatures grazing in their natural habitat. After this incredible wildlife viewing, we will get back on the boat for a 3-hour trip to the lodge on Handeuleum Island, our home for the night. Upon arrival, you can settle into your accommodation before enjoying a well-deserved dinner, sharing stories of the day’s adventures.
Day 3: Canoeing the Cigenter River & The Return Journey (Breakfast, Lunch)
Wake up early to catch the beautiful sunrise from the port of Handeuleum Island. The tranquil morning light over the water is a sight to behold. After breakfast and packing up, we will begin the day’s main activity: a serene canoeing trip to the estuary of the Cigenter River. This journey takes you through a mesmerizing tunnel of mangrove trees and is the perfect opportunity to spot various wildlife, including snakes, monkeys, and colorful birds in their natural habitat. The sounds of the jungle and the gentle paddle of the canoe make this an unforgettable experience.
From Handeuleum Island, we will begin our journey back to Sumur, a boat trip of approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival, we’ll have a final lunch together, reflecting on the amazing sights and sounds of the past two days. From Sumur, the bus will be waiting to take you back to Jakarta.
