Beginner Surf Camp in Pelabuhan Ratu – 3D2N
A relaxed 3-day surf escape from Jakarta for first-time surfers
If you have always wanted to learn how to surf but never found the right time, a weekend in Pelabuhan Ratu is a good place to start.
From Jakarta, we head south toward the Indian Ocean and the coastal villages of Sukabumi. The atmosphere changes quickly. The traffic and noise of the city give way to rice fields, small villages and finally the coastline.
This 3-day, 2-night surf camp is designed for beginners who want more than a short surf lesson. You will have time to learn the fundamentals, practice in the water, rest between sessions and experience the quieter side of Pelabuhan Ratu.
The program is deliberately kept relaxed. Surfing depends on the ocean, so we do not force a session simply to follow a clock. The exact surf location and session timing may change according to swell, tide, wind and local conditions.
Why Learn to Surf in Pelabuhan Ratu?
Pelabuhan Ratu is one of West Java’s best-known surfing areas and is relatively accessible from Jakarta. The coastline has several surf breaks with different characteristics, which gives us flexibility when choosing where to surf.
For beginners, the most important thing is not simply finding the most famous wave.
It is finding the right conditions.
That is why we check the ocean before each session and select a location that matches the ability of the participants and the conditions on the day.
When the conditions are suitable, beginners can start with the fundamentals in a more forgiving area before progressing toward more challenging waves.

Ready to Ride the Waves?
No prior experience needed. Escape the city crowd, catch the weekend swell, and experience the laid-back coastal vibe of Cimaja and Pelabuhan Ratu with a dedicated surf coach>
What You Will Learn
This camp is suitable for people who have never surfed before or have only tried surfing once or twice.
Your instructor will introduce you to:
- Understanding the beach and basic ocean conditions
- Surfboard and equipment
- How to carry and position your board
- Paddling technique
- Safe ways to fall and get back on the board
- Basic surf etiquette
- The pop-up technique
- Catching whitewater waves
- Maintaining balance while riding toward the beach
- Understanding when and where to catch a wave
- Basic positioning in the water
The goal is not to turn you into an advanced surfer in three days.
The goal is to give you a proper foundation and enough confidence to continue surfing after the trip.
Where Will We Surf?
We don’t choose the surf spot simply because it is famous.
We choose it according to the conditions.
The Pelabuhan Ratu coastline has several areas where surfing can be practiced. Depending on the swell, tide, wind and your experience level, the instructor may recommend a different beach for the session.
For beginners, areas such as Sunset Beach and Karang Papak may be considered when conditions are appropriate. More experienced participants may be introduced to other breaks around the area.
Cimaja is one of the best-known surf breaks in the region, but it is important to understand that it is not always a beginner wave. As conditions change, the character of the ocean changes too.
This is why your instructor makes the final decision about where to surf.
The 3D2N Experience
Day 1 — Jakarta to Pelabuhan Ratu
We leave Jakarta and travel south toward Pelabuhan Ratu.
The journey is part of the experience. Along the way, the landscape gradually changes from the urban environment of Jakarta to the greener countryside of West Java.
After arriving in the Pelabuhan Ratu area, we check in and settle into the accommodation.
The rest of the afternoon is intentionally relaxed.
You can walk along the coast, enjoy the sunset or simply rest before the following day’s surf session.
Overnight: Pelabuhan Ratu / Cimaja area
Day 2 — First Surf Session
We start the day with breakfast before heading to the selected surf beach.
The first session begins on land.
Your instructor will explain the equipment, basic ocean awareness, paddling technique and the pop-up movement. We then move into the water and start with simple waves appropriate for beginners.
There is no need to rush.
Learning to surf involves falling, trying again and gradually understanding how the ocean moves.
After the morning session, we return for lunch and a proper break.
The afternoon is free.
You can relax at the accommodation, explore the surrounding coast or simply enjoy a slower afternoon by the beach.
Overnight: Pelabuhan Ratu / Cimaja area
Day 3 — Second Surf Session and Return to Jakarta
We make the most of the morning when the conditions are usually more suitable for surfing.
The second session builds on what you learned the previous day.
Depending on your progress and the conditions, your instructor may introduce you to catching waves with more independence, improving your positioning and beginning to understand unbroken waves.
After the session, we return for breakfast and prepare for the journey back to Jakarta.
We leave Pelabuhan Ratu after the final activity and drive back to Jakarta.

Best Time for a Surf Camp
Surfing conditions around Pelabuhan Ratu change throughout the year.
For beginners, the best time is not simply determined by a calendar month. Swell size, wind, tide and the specific beach being used all affect the quality and safety of a session.
Our surf instructor checks the conditions and selects the most suitable location for the group.
For this reason, the itinerary should be considered flexible rather than a fixed schedule.
A Note About Safety
Surfing is an ocean activity and conditions can change quickly.
We will not run a surf session when the conditions are considered unsuitable for the participants.
Your instructor may change the surf location, session time or activity depending on the ocean conditions.
Participants should be physically fit enough for basic swimming and paddling activity and must follow the instructor’s safety instructions at all times.

Why Choose a 3-Day Surf Camp Instead of a 2-Hour Lesson?
A two-hour lesson is a good introduction to surfing.
But if you want to actually spend a weekend learning the sport, the 3D2N format gives you something different.
You have time to make mistakes.
You have time to rest.
You have another morning to get back into the water.
And, perhaps most importantly, you get to experience Pelabuhan Ratu rather than simply driving several hours from Jakarta for a lesson and immediately returning home.
This is a small surf trip, not a surf factory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can complete beginners join?
Yes. The program is designed primarily for first-time surfers and beginners.
Do I need to bring my own surfboard?
No. Surfing equipment is provided as part of the package.
Will we definitely surf at Cimaja?
Not necessarily.
Cimaja is a famous surf break, but the best location for a beginner depends on the conditions on the day. Your instructor will choose the most appropriate surf spot.
How long is the drive from Jakarta?
Travel time depends heavily on the starting point, traffic and road conditions. Allow several hours for the journey rather than planning the trip around an exact driving time.
Can I join as a solo traveler?
Yes, subject to the availability and final arrangement of the trip.
What happens if the waves are too big?
The instructor will assess the conditions and may move the session to a more suitable location or adjust the activity.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Participants should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. Surfing takes place in an open-water environment, so basic water confidence is important.
