Panaitan Island Surf Trip – Boat Living in Ujung Kulon National Park
A remote West Java surf adventure by private boat
Leave Jakarta behind and head into one of Indonesia’s most remote surf destinations.
Panaitan Island sits inside Ujung Kulon National Park, surrounded by jungle, reef breaks and open ocean. Getting here is part of the experience: travel from Jakarta to the coast, board your boat, and spend several days living on the water while moving between Panaitan’s surf breaks.
This is not a typical surf camp.
There is no resort town, no crowded beachfront and no easy road access.
You come here for the waves, the isolation and the adventure.
Why Surf Panaitan Island?
Panaitan is known for powerful reef breaks and long, hollow waves. The island offers several surf spots, allowing the boat crew to choose where to surf according to swell, wind, tide and your ability.
Some of the best-known breaks include:
- One Palm Point
- Napalm
- Apocalypse
- Illusion
- Indicator
- Croc & Roll
- Pussy’s
The main attraction is not simply the number of waves.
It is the possibility of waking up on a boat, checking the ocean, and choosing where to surf that day.
Conditions always determine the actual surf location.
This Is a Surf Expedition, Not a Resort Holiday
Panaitan is remote.
You will spend much of the trip on a boat and in a natural environment with limited facilities.
That is exactly the point.
Your accommodation becomes part of the adventure.
Wake up on the boat, have breakfast, check the waves, surf, return for lunch, explore another break, and watch the sunset from the water.
There is no need to drive from one hotel to another.
The boat follows the surf.
From Jakarta to Panaitan Island
The journey starts in Jakarta.
Depending on your selected arrangement, we can arrange pick-up from Jakarta Airport or your Jakarta hotel and transfer you toward the departure port.
From the coast, you board the private boat and continue across the sea toward Panaitan Island.
The journey takes several hours and is part of the expedition.
Because this is a remote destination, we recommend travelling light and bringing only the equipment you actually need.
Please tell us in advance how many surfboards and bags you are bringing so we can arrange the transfer and boat space accordingly.
Surf Spots Around Panaitan
One Palm Point
One of Panaitan’s most famous waves.
This long left-hand reef break can produce powerful, hollow barrels and is best approached by experienced surfers.
Helmet and appropriate surf equipment are strongly recommended, and specific safety requirements may apply.
Napalm
A powerful left-hand wave with barrel sections and a more demanding character.
Apocalypse
A heavy right-hand reef break known for powerful barrels.
This is not a beginner wave.
Illusion
A right-hand reef break with a smooth take-off, workable walls and barrel sections.
Indicator
A more workable right-hander that can provide a fun session when conditions are suitable.
Croc & Roll
A left-hand reef break with a deep channel that can make access to the lineup easier.
Pussy’s
One of the more manageable waves around Panaitan, with workable walls breaking into deeper water.
The actual surf spots visited during your trip depend on ocean conditions and the experience of the group.
More Than Surfing
Panaitan is part of Ujung Kulon National Park, so the trip is also about exploring a remote marine environment.
When you’re not surfing, depending on conditions and availability, you can add other activities such as:
Snorkeling
Explore clear water around the island when conditions are suitable.
Spearfishing
For guests interested in spearfishing, this can be arranged subject to local conditions, regulations and availability.
Camping
Spend a night on land instead of the boat if camping is included or arranged for your trip.
BBQ Under the Stars
Enjoy a relaxed BBQ on the island or boat when conditions allow.
Diving & Freediving
Available by arrangement and may involve additional costs.
